This weekend’s matchup between the Niners and Viks will feature the best running back in the NFL in Adrian Peterson and one of the, if not the best linebackers in the NFL in Patrick Willis. The only time Peterson has faced the 49ers was December 9, 2007 in which he rushed for only 3 yards on 14 carries, averaging 0.2 yards a carry. Willis was his normal self watching and stopping Peterson all day as he finished with 6 tackles and a fumble recovery.
“That’s a game that sticks in my mind,” Peterson said. “It’s the worst game of my career. I don’t take it lightly. I give praise to San Francisco’s defense.”
I was at the game and was expecting to watch Peterson put on a running show but to my surprise it was Willis and the D putting on a show. Even though the 49ers lost it was the game Shaun Hill made his debut for the 49ers. The 49ers will not be at home this time as they will be playing in the Metrodome which is never an easy thing to do. With Willis spying Peterson all day the 49ers can slow down the running game. Then again the way Peterson has been running and juking like he was playing Madden in real life the 49ers have tough hill to climb this weekend. Expect the 49ers to review game-tape of the Dec. 9, 2007 game and perfect what they did wrong. We have some of the same defensive players from 2007 but now we have a defense that has learned how to be physical and pound the running back with hits. Both Willis (pick 11) and Peterson (pick 7) were drafted in the first-round of the 2007 NFL draft. There were immediate expectations for both and they did not disappoint as Willis won the Defensive Rookie of the Year and Peterson won Offensive Rookie of the Year. Both players will come out wanting to prove something. Question is which player will win? With Peterson having a back injury, he is expected to play, I say advantage Willis. He will give Peterson the willies all day.
