Singletary Named Head Coach

Shortly after the 49ers impressive come from behind 27-24 win over the Washington Redskins recently anointed owner in charge Jed Joke, I mean York, announced in the 49ers locker room Mike Singletary will be back as head coach under a four-year $10 million contract. Singletary deserved being named head coach especially after finishing over .500 at 5-4 after Sundays win which would have been better than fired head coach Mike Nolan would have finished if he remained through the end. The players not only on defense but on offense have bought into the direction Singletary wants to take the team. What Singletary asks for on each play is 100% dedication and determination. If he does not get that from you he will not play you no matter who you are or think you are (See Vernon Davis week 10). Singletary has been part of the 49ers organization since Nolan was hired (Nolan brought Singletary to the team from the Ravens) and he has since been building his resume as a head coach while developing a special bond with the players since then. Singletary has earned the respect of the leaders of the team Frank Gore and Patrick Willis which means the rest of the team has bought in and believes in what Singletary wants to accomplish. I believe he can lead the 49ers to the playoffs as quickly as next year but in order for the Red and Gold to go back to their glory years they need a seasoned and experience general manger. Current GM Scot McCloughan will not cut it because he was right there with Nolan in deciding to draft Alex Smith and Vernon Davis. Both are uncertain has far as the development into bona fide superstars and are currently considered busts as Smith was selected with the 1st pick in 2005 and Davis 6th overall pick in 2006.

The 49ers needs on both offense and defense are abundant but that will be addressed in free agency and the draft. The next step for the team is determining whether or not offensive coordinator Mike Martz will return next year. The 49ers have had five different offensive coordinators since 2004 but a change might be needed even though Martz made strides in developing the 49ers offense. Singletary and Martz’s offensive philosophies are completely different in style and what type of plays to call in certain situations. Singletary is expected to announce Wednesday if Martz will come back which is good considering the uphill challenge the whole offense will have in learning a new system and terminology if Martz is not brought back. I say bring back Martz with the one year left on his contract and see if he can build on what he did this year. The offense is familiar with system and seemed comfortable in Martz’s play calling this year. Martz showed in the Monday Night Football game against the Cardinals he can adapt to Singletary’s philosophy and run the ball effectively. And who is to say that different offensive philosophies are bad for a team? I say the more different voices you have the better decisions that will be made. It is Singletary’s job to determine what is best for the offense which I believe he will do and make the right decisions.
