D Comes Up Big in Win

The 49ers defense finally showed up to play this year holding the Buffalo Bills on Sunday to just 3 points helping them pull out the 10-3 win. Grant it, the 49ers gave up 350 total yards of offense but what was impressive was the Bills getting inside the 10-yardline three times and only coming away with a field-goal. The 49ers D continued to fend off the Bills as they tried to tie the game late in the game. The Bills kicker Rian Lindell missed kicks of 20 and 40 yards. Remember this was a Bills team that scored 54 points last week and was playing at home fighting for a playoff spot. The D made strides this week getting 3 sacks while pressuring the quarterback all day and had one fumble recovery. The 49ers D still have work to do as they face the Jets next week but not giving up a touchdown the whole was a huge step.

The 49ers offense scored on the first drive of the game going 72 yards scoring on touchdown pass to Isaac Bruce. Shaun Hill had a steady game passing for 14 of 23, 161 yards, one touchdown, zero interceptions. This is why Hill is a good fit at quarterback for the 49ers. In tight games he manages the game well and does not force plays resulting in turnovers. Frank Gore rushed for only 66 yards which surprisingly did not doom the 49ers to lose the game. The 49ers should have had another touchdown but a bad penalty was called after Vernon Davis caught a touchdown for over 30 yards.

The 49ers were the first West Coast team to travel East and win a game. Amazing that no West Coast team has done that yet. The Bills were at home and favored but the 49ers came out with a solid game plan on both sides of the ball. This was the best coached game this year for the 49ers. Mike Singletary, Mike Martz and Greg Manusky deserve credit for the win. Singletary gets extra points this week towards retaining the head coach position as the 49ers got their first win against a team with a winning record.

Next Up: New York Bret’s at home

Both the offense and defense will need to play better next week if the 49ers expect to pull out a win. The Jets are a much better team than the Bills and have a solid offense and defense that will try to exploit the Niner’s weakness.
