Packers defender reveals ignorance with false Brock Purdy narrative

This might be a case of saying, "Tell us you haven't watched Brock Purdy play without actually saying you haven't watched Brock Purdy play."

Devonte Wyatt declared that pressure on Brock Purdy would 'guarantee' a turnover for the Packers when they face the 49ers in the NFL playoffs on Saturday.

Green Bay Packers second-year defensive tackle Devonte Wyatt feels as if he has the "secret sauce" for defeating quarterback Brock Purdy and the San Francisco 49ers.

The two teams square off this Saturday in the divisional round of the 2024 NFL playoffs, and the winner will advance to the NFC Championship game for the right to play in the Super Bowl this February.

For the Niners, they have to feel pretty good about beating Green Bay in the playoffs four times in a row, but Wyatt and Co. hope to reverse that trend by upsetting Purdy and his heavily favored teammates at Levi's Stadium this weekend.

Wyatt, perhaps wrongly, thinks he knows how to do just that.

Devonte Wyatt says Brock Purdy is 'always throwing off' when under pressure

Speaking to The Athletic's Matt Schneidman, Wyatt made the following declaration about how to beat Purdy:

"When D-linemen just get pressure into him, he's always throwing off or it's behind them or it's overthrown or short. When you get pressure on him, it's a guarantee we'll get a turnover."

Oh?

Wyatt might not be speaking about Purdy. Perhaps he's thinking about a former San Francisco quarterback who was far less mobile under pressure and made far more errant throws when facing such pressure.

Or, it's possible that Wyatt simply hasn't watched any of Purdy's games this season.

Why Devonte Wyatt is dead wrong about Brock Purdy

Purdy, who led the league in passer rating (113.0) and set a franchise record for single-season passing yards (4,280), has plenty of game tape where he's making exceptional throws while under pressure.

Like this play against the Washington Commanders in Week 17:

There are plenty of other plays that illustrate the point, but let's move on.

According to Pro Football Focus, whose player grades may be terrible but can otherwise offer some good insight into other metrics and analytics, Purdy's passer rating when facing pressure is 90.2. Regarding the turnovers, of his 11 interceptions thrown, six of them took place when under pressure. The other five occurred without pressure, so that's not much of a correlation either.

Not terrible. And when he's blitzed, his passer rating skyrocketed up to 123.3.

Even Schneidman had to illustrate Wyatt's point being slightly off:

Either way, it's some potential bulletin-board material for Purdy and the Niners, who'll look to prove Wyatt and the Packers wrong when the two teams square off on Saturday, Jan. 20 at 8:15 p.m. ET from Levi's Stadium in Santa Clara, California.
