It took almost no time for Raiders to claim recently cut 49ers defensive back

It almost seemed a foregone conclusion the San Francisco 49ers would part ways with their Round 5 pick from the 2023 NFL Draft, cornerback Darrell Luter Jr., after three relatively uninspiring seasons with the franchise.

In light of several moves to beef up the back end of the cornerback depth chart this offseason, Luter's tenure was in danger.

Indeed, when the Niners announced their full cuts ahead of their opening 53-man roster, Luter was among those let go.

But it didn't take long for him to find a new home.

Raiders claim former 49ers CB Darrell Luter at 1st possible opportunity

According to a report from ESPN's Adam Schefter, the Las Vegas Raiders are putting in a claim on Luter:

Since Vegas owns the No. 1 waiver claim, it's not surprising to see the regime act aggressively as it looks to turn things around under first-year head coach Klint Kubiak. And while Kubiak's specialty is on the opposite side of the ball from Luter, the two did cross paths back in 2023 when the coach was on San Francisco's staff.

Luter might best be known for his special teams gaffe in the Super Bowl back in February of 2024, and he'd largely been fringe player serving as a mere backup during the bulk of his 49ers tenure.

Over 27 games played, three of them starts, the former South Alabama defensive back registered 28 tackles, a forced fumble and one pass broken up.

Considering the rebuild Las Vegas is going through right now, there's a good chance Luter is able to reinvent himself and hopefully find a niche that turns into something much more promising. He's still just 26 years old, and even though his time with the Niners wasn't particularly great, there's still a lot more room to revitalize his career.

Luter and the Raiders will play San Francisco in Week 9.
