Back in 2023, there were plenty of lofty hopes for then-rookie cornerback Darrell Luter Jr. emerging as one of the San Francisco's next late-round NFL Draft finds.
Yeah, nothing of the sort ever happened.
Sadly, the South Alabama product's career with the Niners might still best be known for his special teams gaffe in the Super Bowl the February after being drafted, and Luter hasn't exactly made up for it in the years since.
And it's looking more likely than not he'll be quietly discharged from his duties with San Francisco in the very near future, at least based on what the 49ers have done over the course of the offseason.
True, Luter appeared in a career-high 17 games in 2025, even starting three of them and seeing an unprecedented 271 defensive snaps while still contributing heavily on special teams. Yet he surrendered a 101.0 passer rating when targeted and allowed an average of 13.7 yards per allowed completion.
Entering the final year of his rookie contract, the 49ers would be on the hook for a mere $78,378 in dead money, if he's waived as part of pre-Week 1 roster cuts.
Based on what the Niners have done at cornerback, that seems likely.
Darrell Luter Jr. is likely counting down his final weeks with 49ers
Luter isn't the only question San Francisco faces at cornerback. Third-year pro Renardo Green, too, is under a bit of a microscope, but it surely appears as if the 49ers are gathering more evidence on his case as opposed to Luter's own.
Instead, Luter has to be threatened by several of the Niners' offseason moves at the position, primarily the free-agent pickup of veteran Nate Hobbs and the day-three drafting of Ephesians Prysock; both players potentially looking to secure a CB4 role on the depth chart.
If either one manages to outperform Luter in training camp and the preseason, it'd be potentially disastrous to the fourth-year pro's roster chances.
And it wouldn't be a major shock if San Francisco has already concluded such anyway.
Perhaps the newfound pressure is what Luter needs as he begins to slip deeper off the bubble, and he ultimately rewards the 49ers' patience by delivering under pressure when training camp kicks off.
However, the Niners appear to have moved on already, likely suggesting Luter winds up being part of those final cuts once the regular season rolls around.
