49ers should cut these 2 players after preseason Week 1 loss to Titans
The San Francisco 49ers lost to the Tennessee Titans in Week 1 of the NFL preseason last Saturday. We saw some players perform well and likely guarantee a roster spot while others struggled.
These two players should be cut after rough performances.
The Niners were merely hoping to get out of Tennessee injury-free, which unfortunately did not happen. Beyond that, they were hoping to get an extended look at some of their reserve players who are trying to make the team.
Some players like running back Jordan Mason and linebacker Dee Winters shone, while others did not help their case of making the 53-man roster.
One player who did not help his cause was cornerback Ambry Thomas.
Thomas had a costly holding penalty near the end zone after Winters made an impressive goal-line tackle. Thomas also missed several tackles in the game. These sort of mistakes is really what we have become accustomed to with Thomas in his time as a Niner. He can have solid moments and even some solid games, but he has never been able to be consistent for the team in his role.
Plus, Thomas ended up breaking his forearm in the game as well, which hurts his chances of making the team. It may seem heartless to cut a player after an injury, but the 49ers have plenty of other options at cornerback so it would be best for them to cut their losses at this point.
Another player who struggled was wide receiver Ronnie Bell.
The second-year player had a very bad drop on a great pass from quarterback Brandon Allen deep in Niners territory. He also had a holding call that caused a drive to stall. Bell made rookie mistakes like these last season along with running bad routes, which hurts his chances to make the team.
The Niners have veterans Trent Taylor and Chris Conley playing well, and at this point in time, they would be preferable to Bell.
While Thomas is on the shelf, there is still time for Bell to turn things around. But he is going to have to do well these next two preseason games if he wants to avoid being cut ahead of the regular season.
