49ers updated injury report for preseason Week 2
By Peter Panacy
Injuries are already creeping up on the 49ers, who opted to cancel joint practices with the Saints in advance of preseason Week 2.
Just barely one week into the 2024 preseason, the San Francisco 49ers are being impacted by injuries.
During last Saturday's exhibition loss to the Tennessee Titans, cornerback Ambry Thomas suffered a broken forearm that'll sideline him indefinitely. And while Thomas might have been a long shot to make the regular-season 53-man roster, his loss highlights just how precarious a player's health can be.
Additionally, linebacker Dee Winters went down with what looked like a serious injury scare, only to return to the game shortly thereafter.
A number of other key players weren't available for Saturday's contest because of injuries, too, which probably influenced head coach Kyle Shanahan's decision to cancel joint practices and scrimmages with the New Orleans Saints down in Southern California in advance of both teams' second preseason tilt of the year.
One can only hope the recent string of injuries is merely a blip on the season and not an indication of what's to come.
49ers preseason Week 2 injury report
Unlike the regular season, teams aren't required to announce official injury reports ahead of each week, leaving individual players' statuses a bit difficult to figure out.
- CB Ambry Thomas (forearm): Likely to be placed on an injury list or waived with a settlement
- WR Ricky Pearsall (shoulder)
- LB Fred Warner (foot)
- RB Christian McCaffrey (calf)
- RB Isaac Guerendo (hamstring)
- RB Elijah Mitchell (hamstring)
- P Mitch Wishnowsky (knee)
- DL Kalia Davis (knee)
- CB Isaac Yiadom (ankle)
- OL Aaron Banks (finger)
- OL Jon Feliciano (knee)
- OL Spencer Burford (hand)
Pearsall is still listed on the active/non-football injury list, while linebacker Dre Greenlaw (Achilles) and safety Talanoa Hufanga (knee) are on the active/physically unable-to-perform list.
Greenlaw is expected to miss at least a few weeks into the regular season, while Hufanga is aiming to return in Week 1.
The Niners also recently added defensive end Drake Jackson (knee) to the reserve/PUP list, effectively ending his season before it even began.
Defensive lineman Austin Bryant, offensive lineman Pat Elflein and wide receiver Malik Turner are all on injured reserve.
