There’s still time for NFL teams to make moves and shake things up a bit before the start of this season.
The San Francisco 49ers have a number of enticing trade chips if they want to use them so let’s take a look at three players who are most likely to be dealt in the coming month.
Mac Jones
Many assumed quarterback Mac Jones would be traded earlier in the offseason, but that did not happen. Whether interest in him simply wasn’t all that strong or the Niners were asking for too much, he remains with San Francisco.
He seems to be happy with that, and so do the 49ers. Jones has been open about the fact his time with San Francisco has rekindled his love for football. With the way he played last season, filling in for an injured Brock Purdy, Jones is playing some of his best football.
But what if a team out there has an injury and needs a quality quarterback immediately? That could put the 49ers in an advantageous position and could lead to them getting a nice draft pick.
It would certainly be a risk to move Jones when Purdy has dealt with numerous injuries in his career, but if the return outweighs that risk, then Jones could be traded.
Renardo Green
The 49ers have denied having interest in trading cornerback Renardo Green, but that has not stopped the rumors from swirling around him. He’s shown some promise in his first two seasons, but many still consider him the weak link among the Niners' starting corners.
For now, the Niners seem committed to him, but it may not take much to move on from Green. If San Francisco doesn’t love what it sees in training camp or the preseason, but another team out there has a need for a corner, then it may be smart to deal him.
The Niners drafted Ephesians Prysock and also signed experienced players like Jack Jones and Nate Hobbs, so they have no shortage of options to replace Green if he goes elsewhere.
Ji’Ayir Brown
There was some trade chatter about safety Ji’Ayir Brown last season, especially when it seemed like he was going to be relegated to a bench role. He reclaimed his starter status by the end of the season and has gotten into it with Donte Whitner this offseason, so his spot with the team is still unclear.
Safety still seems to be a very fluid position for the Niners with Malik Mustapha being the only player who is almost certain to be a starter. That other safety spot is up for grabs, and if the Niners like Marques Sigle and Ashtyn Davis, then it may be time to move on from Brown.
None of these trades feels especially likely, but if general manager John Lynch is working the phones and gauging interest, then San Francisco could make a move if the deal is right.
