It has been a tough first two seasons for San Francisco 49ers cornerback Renardo Green. He has shown some promise, but he’s also made a number of mistakes, which is why trade rumors continue to swirl around him.
Matt Barrows of The Athletic recently mused in a mailbag column that Green could be a potential trade candidate.
He writes of Green:
“There have been persistent trade rumors — albeit denied by the 49ers — dating back to last season. The team has some depth at cornerback after signing Nate Hobbs and Jack Jones in free agency and drafting Prysock in the fourth round. If Green were traded, there might be a four-way battle for the starting spot among Hobbs, Jones, Prysock and Darrell Luter Jr.”
The 49ers have said they want to give Green another opportunity, so if we take them at their word, then they may give the third-year player out of Florida State another chance to prove the Niners made a good decision by picking him in Round 2 of the 2024 NFL Draft.
He played in all 17 games as a rookie in 2024, starting seven of them. He had one interception, one forced fumble and 13 passes defended on the season. He followed that up in 2025 by starting 14 games with no interceptions and 10 passes defended.
The 49ers can deny trade chatter all they want, but everyone remembers Green getting chewed out by head coach Kyle Shanahan on the sideline last season when the team got blown out by the Seattle Seahawks in the playoffs. Clearly there is room for improvement, and if he does not improve, then he should be traded to make way for other players.
San Francisco will not just play him indefinitely if he is not playing up to snuff. Barrows noted there are several players right behind him on the depth chart who would love to step into the starting role if he struggles.
Rookie Ephesians Prysock out of Washington is an interesting guy to watch. He’s a shiny new toy and could supplant Green if he impresses in training camp and the preseason. Nate Hobbs and Jack Jones are two players with some experience who could also work their way into the mix.
Green is essentially on thin ice. He has a tenuous hold on the starting role as of right now, but no one would be all that shocked if he gets replaced or traded at some point this season.
