The San Francisco 49ers got behind early on Saturday night against the Seattle Seahawks and were never able to get back on track.

Head coach Kyle Shanahan ushered a new player into his infamous doghouse.

Shanahan absolutely laid into cornerback Renardo Green on the sideline after a first-half touchdown, and the 49ers clearly need to figure things out at the cornerback position in the future:

This moment occurred after Green came out of the game, and the Seahawks scored on a touchdown pass to wide receiver Jaxon Smith-Njigba. Green would have been covering that route if he had still been in the game, but Darrell Luter Jr. covered the route instead and was clearly outmatched.

Green went back into the game after that because clearly Luter is not a very suitable replacement, but the Niners have to think about his future after Shanahan was so visibly miffed at him.

We do not know exactly why Shanahan was so angry. Perhaps it was just frustration coming out at how poorly the team had started the game, but clearly Green did something to anger him.

The Florida State product came into his second pro season hoping to take a leap forward after a promising rookie campaign. He started all 14 games he played in 2025 and had 10 passes defended, down from the 13 he had in 17 games last season.

He had no interceptions after recording just one pick last season, so there is still work to do, for him and the entire defense, for that matter, as a ball hawk.

Right now, Green is clearly the weak link at cornerback for the Niners.

Deommodore Lenoir is still San Francisco's top cornerback and is going to be around for a while after signing a big extension last season.

Rookie Upton Stout proved to be a revelation at the nickel corner spot, so he definitely looks like a key part of the defense's future.

But the Niners are going to have to figure out how to upgrade over Green this offseason. It would not be a big surprise if they tried to address the position in the 2026 NFL Draft or maybe tried to look at upgrades in free agency.

However they do it, they are going to have to make some changes to the defense in the offseason. The group deserves a little slack after being so banged up and missing key players, but Green being in Shanahan's doghouse opens the door to improve.
