1 obvious schedule quirk should deter 49ers from trading for a wide receiver

Maybe the need isn't as glaring as it seems.

Right now, at least as far as well-known names go, the San Francisco 49ers' wide receiver room consists of Mike Evans and no one else of note.

Unless that list includes Brandin Cooks, of course, who at least had a touchdown grab in the Niners' Week 5 victory over the Seattle Seahawks.

Yet that game cost San Francisco its other top wideout, Deebo Samuel, who'll be out for a few weeks with a hamstring injury, joining a longer list of receivers who are too banged up to play right now: De'Zhaun Stribling (ankle), Demarcus Robinson (ankle), Christian Kirk (hamstring) and Ricky Pearsall (knee).

At 5-0 despite the receiving shortages, it makes sense why general manager John Lynch needs to explore trades. A few names have been floated around already, including the Jacksonville Jaguars' Brian Thomas Jr. and the Minnesota Vikings' Jauan Jennings.

Thomas would certainly be the costlier of the two, at least based on production.

But, there's a bluntly obvious reason why Lynch doesn't get overly aggressive for a wide receiver on the trade market, and it's staring the franchise right in the face.

49ers' Week 8 bye should discourage any trade for a WR

With a 2.5-game lead over the Hawks for the NFC West's top spot, the 49ers already have a little bit of breathing room heading into the middle of the season.

Kirk was eligible to come off his injury list after sitting out the first four weeks, while both Robinson and Stribling are expected back not too long after the Niners' bye in Week 8. Assuming Samuel's injury creates a three-week absence, he'd likely be ready to go for Week 9's showdown against the Las Vegas Raiders, who've given up a combined 75 points in back-to-back losses in Weeks 4 and 5.

49ers schedule, Weeks 6 through 11

  • Week 6 vs. Washington Commanders
  • Week 7 @ Atlanta Falcons
  • Week 8: Bye
  • Week 9 vs. Las Vegas Raiders
  • Week 10 @ Dallas Cowboys
  • Week 11 vs. Minnesota Vikings

The week thereafter, San Francisco takes on the Dallas Cowboys, whose defense has given up the second most yards of any squad to date (1,9711).

Truly, it isn't until Week 11, Nov. 22 (over a month away), when the 49ers will face an elite defense in the Vikings.

Between now and the bye week, the Niners have to face the 1-3-1 Washington Commanders, owners of the third-worst scoring defense through Week 5, and then the 2-3 Atlanta Falcons, boasting a middle-of-the-pack defense, at best.

If San Francisco believes it can get by both Washington and Atlanta with Evans headlining the receiver room, complemented by pass-catching targets like tight end George Kittle and running back Christian McCaffrey, then there'd be little reason to expend coveted draft capital on a wide receiver.

The timely bye week affords that, and so does the fact reinforcements are expected back shortly thereafter.
