Sunday saw the San Francisco 49ers earn a massive victory over the Seattle Seahawks to improve to 5-0 on the season. Unfortunately, they lost wide receiver Deebo Samuel in the process, which means general manager John Lynch is now under even more pressure to make a move.
Samuel went down with what appeared to be a hamstring injury and fumbled the ball on the play, which allowed Seattle to go down and score. It wasn't Deebo's best game, as he had just two catches for 21 yards and another four yards on the ground, but he has already proven this season that he looks very much back at home in San Francisco's offense.
One hopes he doesn't miss a significant chunk of time with the hamstring injury, but we have seen hamstrings keep guys out for a while in the past. Tight end George Kittle missed five games with a hamstring injury just last season, so the Niners have to be prepared to go without Samuel for over a month.
The injury leaves the niners little choice but to trade for another wide receiver. While Mike Evans had a huge game for San Francisco on Sunday, he cannot do everything, especially given his age and the injuries that he is currently dealing with.
The 2026 49ers deserve to be in John Lynch's good graces
This 49ers squad is clearly a legitimate Super Bowl contender. Lynch doesn't make a blockbuster every year, but when a team has the potential to make a title run, he has gone out and gotten players like Emmanuel Sanders, Christian McCaffrey, and Chase Young.
2026 feels like one of those "make a move" seasons. The Niners are 5-0, and they have beaten every team in the NFC West already. They have to be thinking about trying to get the No. 1 seed the way they did in 2019 and 2023. In both seasons, they made a Super Bowl appearence.
There are a lot of options out there. Names like Brian Thomas Jr. would make for a big splash. Perhaps Lynch elects to go for a reunion with Jauan Jennings, although the Minnesota Vikings, as the only other undefeated NFC team, may not be in a selling mood.
Lynch has to be working the phones, though. The attrition at the wide receiver position is almost hard to believe, and while the team has been able to go 5-0 despite the injuries, they need to acquire more depth at receiver if they want to keep on rolling.
