49ers have every reason to get Vikings on the phone about a Jauan Jennings trade

San Francisco let him walk in free agency, and now the receiver room needs exactly what he does best

The San Francisco 49ers have a long history with Jauan Jennings. The pass catcher was drafted by the organization and spent the first five years of his NFL career there, making his way from the practice squad all the way to leading the 49ers in touchdown receptions in 2025.

Prior to the 2024 season, Jennings and the Niners agreed to a two-year extension worth $11.89 million. After Jennings posted just under 1,000 yards and six touchdowns in 2024, he felt his deal wasn't up to snuff. In July of 2025, Adam Schefter reported that Jennings was seeking to update his deal, and if not, he wanted a trade.

His efforts paid off, and the two sides agreed to restructure their deal, adding $3 million in playing time incentives. Despite Jennings' stats in 2025,he was unable to come to a long-term agreement with the team. Thus, he elected to walk in free agency.

Jennings has signed a one-year contract with the Minnesota Vikings, supposedly adding to an already well-established receiver room in Minnesota. With Justin Jefferson and Jordan Addison settled into their respective roles as WR1 and WR2, Jennings has taken his seat as the Vikings WR3.

49ers aren't in same position as when they let Jennings walk

The 49ers were quick to replace the spot that Jennings' departure opened up, using their first selection of the 2026 NFL Draft on De'Zhaun Stribling. Unfortunately, he went down in the regular-season opener. Demarcus Robinson was expected to take an elevated role, but he also went down in Week 2 and is expected to miss time.

Mike Evans was brought in as a marquee signing during the offseason, but the veteran wideout has dealt with his share of injuries, and he's questionable entering Week 4.

Despite the 49ers improving their record to 3-0, their wide receiver room is severely hindered, and a potential reunion with Jauan Jennings would be beneficial.

49ers must not let pride get in the way of finding WR solution

Though it would be relatively unlikely for the Vikings to give up their WR3, the 49ers are in a position to be beggars. It's true that the Vikings wouldn't give up Jennings without a godfather-like deal, but at this point, would that be such a bad thing?

Jennings is not only extremely familiar with the 49ers offense, but his skill set is tailor-made for it. His success there didn't happen by accident.

If San Francisco were to make an offer that Minnesota couldn't refuse, it could be a potential investment, especially if they were to retain him long-term (like they probably should have this offseason). Sure, it hurts that they were unable to get a deal done this summer, and they'd now be paying a premium for his services, but hindsight is always 20/20.

Calling Minnesota about Jauan Jennings would cost the 49ers nothing. Spending another week pretending the receiver room is fine would cost the team a whole lot more.
