Jauan Jennings entered the 2026 offseason hoping to get WR1 money from the San Francisco 49ers. When general manager John Lynch refused, the veteran was pushed into the wilderness of free agency, where he eventually landed with the Minnesota Vikings.
Kevin O'Connell's squad is hoping to push its offense over the top with the additions of Jennings and quarterback Kyler Murray, finally reaching the Super Bowl dreams that have consistently evaded them.
They're about to find out what Kyle Shanahan and the Niners learned the hard way about Jennings in 2025. The 29-year-old receiver's career is headed in the wrong direction, and he may not provide the boost Minnesota is looking for.
49ers already know what Vikings are about to find out with Jauan Jennings
It wasn't too long ago that Jennings looked well on his way to becoming a true WR1 in the NFL. In 2024, the former seventh-round pick racked up 975 yards and six touchdowns. He stepped up in San Francisco's injury-riddled offense, taking on a primary role in the passing game.
Understandably, he hoped to earn a major pay raise after his breakout season. Lynch held strong and came out looking like a genius.
Jennings' production dropped dramatically in 2025. While he scored a few extra touchdowns, he put up just 643 receiving yards on 55 catches. The opportunities were certainly there with George Kittle and Ricky Pearsall missing significant time, but Jennings was unable to maintain the production he had enjoyed the year before. His yards per route run plummeted from 2.26 in 2024 to 1.35 in 2025.
Things didn't get any better in the playoffs, as he caught just three passes across two games.
The Vikings aren't looking for Jennings to be their WR1. Justin Jefferson already has that role locked down as one of the best wideouts in football. Even Jordan Addison is a solid secondary piece, assuming he can bounce back from a relatively quiet campaign.
But Minnesota is clearly making a push to contend for a championship in the near future, and Jennings is a key piece in accomplishing that goal. The Norsemen will need consistent production from him out of the slot, especially in the postseason.
If Jennings continues the form he showed in his final season with the 49ers, Vikings fans are only going to be disappointed. It's looking like Lynch and the Niners moved on from the veteran receiver at the perfect time.
