Like the players and coaches, the Niner Noise Podcast took a few weeks off to recharge its batteries, and start getting in the best podcasting shape of its life before training camp kicked off earlier this week.
The opening salvo came on Wednesday, with a sort of preview of camp, a look at the key battles to pay attention to, with particular attention paid to the wide receiver group, which is interesting for a bevy of reasons.
The actual names, your hosts said at the time, were not really up for debate. There are anywhere from four to five players who are essentially guaranteed a roster spot—Mike Evans, De'Zhaun Stribling, Christian Kirk, Jacob Cowing, and Ricky Pearsall—with the likes of Demarcus Robinson and Jordan Watkins just on the outside of the conversation.

Given the state of the wide receiver room in 2025, that would actually be a fairly significant upgrade for Brock Purdy to throw to, especially if everyone remains healthy.
You know where this is going, obviously, because you exist in the present, where things have already progressed.
Pearsall only made it through two practices (if that) before his knee swelled up on him again, indicating the PCL injury he suffered through much of last season was not improving, and the conversation from those speculating outside the Niners' facility is that his season may be over before it starts.
That was further exacerbated by a move the 49ers reportedly made late in the week, bringing back Deebo Samuel after a season away in Washington.
And so that brought forth the second episode of the Niner Noise Podcast in as many days, this time of the emergency variety in order to discuss Pearsall's injury, Samuel's return, and how it impacts both players and the 49ers in the short and long term.

While the excitement for a new version of Deebo in this 49ers offense is palpable, the concern about what this means for Pearsall's career is a real topic of conversation. If he misses this season, which seems all but assured, there's little to suggest the Niners' brass will pick up his fifth-year option next offseason, making his fourth season all the more important.
