In less than a week of training camp, the San Francisco 49ers have already dealt with numerous injuries. The most notable might be pass catcher Ricky Pearsall's PCL complications, as what began as swelling has turned into something potentially more serious.
Though his status is technically up in the air, the team responded to his ailments by signing Deebo Samuel on a one-year deal. The move all but ensures that Pearsall will miss significant time. The only problem, though, is that he may not be able to afford yet another hiatus.
Deebo will join a fragile wide receiver room that is already down Pearsall and veteran Christian Kirk. The former Niner has shown over the past few years that he is clearly past his prime, but the move is an obvious depth play meant to address what has become an uncomfortable trend.
Pearsall is now facing the threat of a third-straight injury-shortened season. It's a pattern that can only be ignored for so long, and it appears the 49ers' patience has worn thin.

It took the red and gold less than 48 hours to sign Samuel after news broke regarding Pearsall's PCL issues. That in and of itself does not bode well for the youngster. It's a clear sign that the franchise knows there is no clear timetable for his return, as they wasted almost no time replacing him.
Now dealing with yet another knee injury, the franchise faces an uncomfortable conversation about Pearsall's true value to the team. If the old saying, "The best ability is availability," rings true, then the former first-round pick is undoubtedly bust territory.
The Florida alumnus will have just one year left on his rookie contract after 2026. The knee issues are beginning to look like a chronic problem, and the talented pass catcher continues to look more like a liability than an asset.
With most of their skill players either in or past their prime, the team doesn't have time to wait around for the wideout to figure out his health. Pearsall is quickly proving that he is incapable of being a part of Kyle Shanahan's winning formula.
The 49ers' offense would be more than competent with Samuel, Mike Evans, and rookie De'Zhaun Stribling as their top-three wide receivers. Add in tight end George Kittle and the highly-touted Christian McCaffrey, and Brock Purdy might have his best set of weapons to date. At this point, one thing is becoming clear: Ricky Pearsall may need the 49ers more than they need him.
