Kyle Shanahan shares how his kids ruined his Halloween plans this year
By Peter Panacy
Kyle Shanahan was eagerly looking forward to Halloween this year, but his kids apparently derailed his hopes for having fun.
Normally, head coach Kyle Shanahan has to spend Halloween preparing for whatever game the San Francisco 49ers have next on their schedule.
This year, however, the Niners received an ideal bye-week break on their schedule for the weekend after the Oct. 31 festivities, giving Shanahan and the rest of his team a chance to relax, recover and take some time away from the grueling grind that runs 18 weeks from September through early January.
With no game to play in Week 9, Shanahan and Co. could actually participate in Halloween festivities.
While many of his players certainly will, including tight end George Kittle and running back Christian McCaffrey, Shanahan's plans for Thursday, Oct. 31, are apparently in the tank.
Thanks to his children.
And the head coach is sad about it, too.
Kyle Shanahan's kids don't want to go trick-or-treating with him
Shanahan joined KNBR 680's Tom Tolbert and Adam Copeland this week and was asked about what he was going to do for Halloween, given the Niners are on their bye.
The head coach was looking forward to trick-or-treating, something he rarely gets to do with his kids, given his usual duties as head coach.
"I was actually so pumped. It hit me that we have Halloween off," Shanahan explained. "I love dressing up and going around with the kids, and no one knowing who you are, and just having a mask on. I love it."
Unfortunately, Shanahan is now confronted with the hard reality every parent faces regarding this sort of thing.
Kids grow up and no longer want to go trick-or-treating. Or, if they still do, they want to do it with friends and not supervising parents.
"I was telling them how excited I was to go with them this year," Shanahan added. "And then my daughter, who's a junior in high school, looked at me, my son, who's a freshman in high school, looked at me, and they're like, 'Dad, we're not going out on Halloween. What do you think?' And I was like, 'Oh, dang.'
"And then I looked to my sixth grader, and I was like, 'Well, I still get to go with you, right?' And she's like, 'Um, dad, that's kind of dorky for you to come with me. You can hang off in the distance.' And I kind of got a [disappointed] face on me, and my older daughter actually felt bad for me. She's like, 'I'll go with you.' I'm like, 'I don't need a pity party, guys.'"
The Niners last had a Week 9 bye back in 2022, playing the night before Halloween on Oct. 30. But postgame film reviews probably occupied Shanahan back than.
And two years for a middle- or high-schooler is the equivalent of a lifetime, another aspect parents know all too well.
Shanahan might still, however, call up either McCaffrey or Kittle to see what their Halloween plans are and if they're going out in the neighborhood to have fun as eccentric trick-or-treaters.
It might not be a bad idea, especially if the coach wants to salvage the nostalgia of the festivity.
