It wouldn't be shocking if both general manager John Lynch and head coach Kyle Shanahan are chuckling a bit right now.
According to a Wednesday report from Fox Sports insider Jordan Schultz, the Washington Commanders are signing veteran All-Pro wide receiver Stefon Diggs, which certainly has a vein of interest for the San Francisco 49ers (aside from the fact the two teams play each other this season).
It effectively means Washington is closing the door on any potential union with disgruntled San Francisco 49ers wide receiver Brandon Aiyuk.

Aiyuk's relationship with the Niners couldn't be any more fractured than it already is. After going AWOL last season, the 2020 Round 1 draftee has taken no shortage of social media shots at his employer, including both Shanahan and Lynch.
In tandem, Aiyuk has made his desire to join the Commanders painfully obvious, provided San Francisco releases him, which it has yet to do.
The social media activity certainly didn't go unnoticed by the Commanders, specifically general manager Adam Peters. And while Aiyuk's posts and near-delusional obsession with Washington weren't necessarily blockers to an eventual contract there, the Diggs pickup certainly is.

The exact details of Diggs' contract with the Commanders isn't known, but it's pretty clear Washington is set with its one-two punch at receiver, adding the veteran to play alongside the incumbent, Terry McLaurin.
Sure, injuries can always play a role in Peters' future decisions, and adding additional firepower is never a bad move.
But, in light of the fact the 49ers have yet to release Aiyuk (and Aiyuk has yet to apply for reinstatement with the league), Peters and Co. are under no obligation to wait things out. Simply put, Diggs is available now and can contribute right away.
Aiyuk, on the other hand, hasn't set foot on the field since his brutal 2024 knee injury. And his susbequent actions certainly stained what had otherwise been a solid reputation.
It'll be provocative to see just how Aiyuk responds to the latest news and whether or not he sees the Commanders as a preferred destination. Judging how he's responded to other perceived "slights," it wouldn't be a shock to see him take to social media again, this time with some sort of grievance aimed at Washington for not pursuing him more actively.
Either way, whatever dream the receiver had about joining the Commanders is all but ended now.
