While it’s easy to make fun of San Francisco 49ers wide receiver Brandon Aiyuk’s recent behavior on social media, it could be revealing a sad reality for him. He may either be going through something we don’t know about or he's content to never play football again.
People on social media have speculated about Aiyuk’s mental well being for a while now. It’s certainly possible that he’s dealing with something, or maybe he just really wants attention however he can get it. Maybe both things can be a little bit true.
With how often he's been posting on social media about the Washington Commanders, it's fair to wonder if he's blurring the line between trolling and reality or if something else is going on.
If he really is dealing with something, though, then it’s very sad to see him behaving this way. He’s slowly embarrassing himself with each video he releases and is certainly not doing anything to make an NFL team want to take a chance on him.
David Lombardi of the San Francisco Standard has also speculated Aiyuk’s recent behavior shows he just doesn’t plan on playing football again. Maybe Aiyuk sees the writing on the wall and knows his recent behavior and the fact he’s coming off a major injury will scare teams away, so he’s just trying to milk his relevance for whatever it’s worth. It’s entirely possible, given Aiyuk’s penchant for finding headlines for years now.
Either way, it would be truly sad if Aiyuk never plays again, or if something is going on that we don’t know about. His talent is unquestionable, and at his best, he was one of the most fun and explosive receivers to ever play in Kyle Shanahan’s offense in San Francisco.
Assuming Aiyuk is healthy, there’s no reason to think he couldn’t become a solid NFL receiver once again. The question is whether he will even be afforded that opportunity or even if he wants it.
No one ever wants to see talent wasted, even if Aiyuk has made the 49ers’ lives much harder these last few years and cost them a lot of time and money.
One just has to hope he’s OK, first and foremost, but even if he is and all of this is just for show, it may be too late to salvage his NFL career with the way he is acting and the way he's tarnished his reputation.
