Brock Purdy will struggle if 49ers' Week 16 game rumor ultimately comes true

It's not the best time of year against this opponent.

It might not be as big a talking point as some of the other nuances surrounding the San Francisco 49ers' 2026 regular-season schedule, especially when compared to a Week 1 road trip all the way across the Pacific to Melbourne, Australia.

But, it's worth keeping tabs on how many cold-weather games the Niners have to play this season.

Particularly from quarterback Brock Purdy's vantage point.

Historically, Purdy hasn't exactly been at his best in inclement weather, and fans may easily recall his worst game as a pro, statistically, came amid a snowstorm late in 2024 against the surging Buffalo Bills in prime time.

Earlier that year, however, Purdy was wholly gutted in a Week 7 loss to the defending-champion Kansas City Chiefs, a game that also saw wide receiver Brandon Aiyuk suffer a torn ACL and MCL—a storyline that continues to evolve nearly two years later.

San Francisco travels to K.C. this season (we've known this for some time). But, as tough as that matchup might be under ideal conditions, there's a potential X-factor at play that could make things ultimately much worse for Purdy and Co.

Brock Purdy should hate rumored late-season game vs. Chiefs

It's not official yet, but there's a rumor Kansas City will host Purdy and the 49ers in Week 16 at 4:25 p.m. ET on Dec. 27:

Sure, quarterback Patrick Mahomes and the Chiefs went a surprising 6-11 last season and missed the playoffs for the first time in his pro career. But, it's safer to assume a bounce-back campaign in 2026 from Kansas City rather than last year being an indicator of what's to come.

Tack on the higher probability of bad weather at that time of year, and things are looking much bleaker for Purdy and his reputation of not being a capable foul-weather signal-caller.

Granted, predicting game outcomes is much like predicting the weather in the Midwest anyway, so trying to guess exactly what Purdy and the Niners will experience late in the calendar year is tough business.

And that's assuming the rumor of a Week 16 game between these two rivals is true in the first place.

If it is, though, it's reasonable to assume Purdy won't be at his best.
