Brock Purdy (nearly) outdid his worst game ever in Week 7 meltdown vs. Chiefs

Was the Week 7 debacle against the Chiefs the worst game in Brock Purdy's career?

Arguably, no. But it's close.

Brock Purdy collapsed in Week 7 against the Chiefs, but should fans consider it the worst game of his NFL career?

Usually, fans and analysts talk about how San Francisco 49ers quarterback Brock Purdy exceeds expectations, sets records and continuously puts himself in the conversation about the best signal-callers of the current era.

In Week 7 against the Kansas City Chiefs, Purdy arguably outdid himself again, albeit in the exact opposite direction.

The Niners' 28-18 collapse against KC highlighted plenty of problems, especially on the injury front and in light of wide receiver Brandon Aiyuk suffering an in-game knee injury that's likely to end his season.

Also without top weapons in running back Christian McCaffrey (Achilles) and wide receivers Deebo Samuel (illness) and Jauan Jennings (hip), pardoning Purdy for some of his many mistakes from the game is understandable.

But it's hard to conclude anything other than Purdy just experienced one of his worst games as a pro.

Even worse than the Christmas Day meltdown at the hands of the Baltimore Ravens last year?

Is Week 7 vs. Chiefs Brock Purdy's worst game ever?

There are few ways to fully quantify a comparative statement like "worst game ever," even if there's a bit of hyperbole there.

What's inarguable is the fact both games -- versus the Ravens in 2023 and versus KC in 2024 -- have to be classified as Purdy's worst over his young career.

Sure, he tossed four interceptions against Baltimore that fateful night while only throwing three against Kansas City. However, the nature of Purdy's picks versus the Chiefs was downright awful. Two of them, including his final interception in the clip below, were forced throws into too tight of coverage:

The other, an overthrow to wide receiver Ronnie Bell, was also a gaffe on Purdy.

Even on Purdy's best two completions, long tosses to tight end George Kittle and wide receiver Jacob Cowing (clips can be viewed here), the ball was underthrown. Had Purdy led his targets properly, San Francisco would be looking at two touchdowns, potentially, especially on the completion to the speedy Cowing.

Further backing up the notion that Purdy's worst game ever was in Week 7 versus KC is the fact his passer rating was 36.7, notably lower than the 42.6 rate against the Ravens a season ago.

Plus, throughout the game against Kansas City, Purdy appeared indecisive and even rattled by coordinator Steve Spagnuolo's coverages.

That said, the quarterback's two rushing touchdowns help relieve some of the pressure on calling the most recent debacle his worst game as a pro.

Unlike the situation on Christmas in 2023, Purdy at least helped put the 49ers in a position to stage a late-game comeback, whereas the game versus the Ravens was all but decided early in the third quarter, eventually leading to the quarterback's benching.

Still, we're comparing two awful games from Purdy, and neither should be commended or praised in any way whatsoever.

They're both terrible. But the Ravens game is just a notch worse.
