The San Francisco 49ers were very clear on who they were and who they weren't willing to spend money on after a disappointing 6-11 season last year. Players on both sides of the football left in free agency, and some were even traded.
When it came to quarterback Brock Purdy's contract situation, the front office viewed their starter as a vital part of the Niners' future and locked him to the tune of a five-year deal worth $265 million.
On Sunday in Week 1, the former Iowa State Cyclone showed the NFL why he will be worth every penny.
49ers' Brock Purdy got the job done
According to Matt Maiocco, a 49ers insider for NBC Sports in the Bay Area, "The 49ers gave their fans reason to cheer with a season-opening victory over the Seattle Seahawks on Sunday." He also added, "It was darn-near the perfect scenario for the first edition of 49ers Overreactions for the 2025 season."
Yes, throwing a pair of second-half interceptions while your team is trailing raises concern when he's about to make an average of $53 million a season going forward. However, Purdy did not let those mistakes reside in his mind when he helped bring San Francisco back in Week 1.
A 17-13 win on the road may not always look the pretty, but a 1-0 record does. To be fair, that's how the Niners started out last year, too, before the rest of the season turned out to be underwhelming.
The connection between Purdy and second-year pass catcher Ricky Pearsall is starting to work out for San Francisco in 2025. Though Pearsall only caught four of the seven throws from Purdy, the 49ers wideout still tallied 108 yards, including a 45-yard reception that helped set up a crucial go-ahead score late in the fourth quarter:

Despite his earlier struggles, Purdy delivered in the moments when it mattered most, including a game-winning pass to third-string tight end Jake Tonges, a play nearly everyone who watched likely thought would have turned into a third interception:

If San Francisco is paying Purdy to be the star, he certainly showed up as the star with the game on the line. It's the same level of expectations for other star quarterbacks around the league, especially when they aren't exactly having the best day up to those crucual moments.
Purdy wasn't the only quarterback to throw more than one pick on Sunday. Yet, the rest of his numbers are still solid as 277 passing yards, two touchdowns, and a passer rating of 80.3 all rank in the top 10.
The 49ers quarterback went from throwing 31 touchdowns and just 11 interceptions in 2023 to recording only 20 touchdowns with 12 interceptions a year later. However, San Francisco still managed to have the fourth-highest passing yards in both seasons.
As long as the 49ers' $265 million man is on the field, San Francisco has a chance to return to both the postseason and the Super Bowl.
