The 49ers are poised to lose more free agents in 2025 than they stand to gain, which makes for an intriguing start to the NFL new year.
The San Francisco 49ers have already endured a tumultuous offseason, headlined by the blockbuster trade of wide receiver Deebo Samuel to the Washington Commanders.
In tandem with multiple reports about the Niners aiming to curtail their spending this offseason while getting younger, general manager John Lynch and Co. may be forced to limit their actions on the free-agent market.
Speaking of NFL free agency, the open window to negotiate new deals with pending free agents begins on Monday, March 10 at 12 p.m. ET, while the official start to the NFL new year is two days later on March 12.
According to Over the Cap, San Francisco has $34.36 million available in cap space, a number that'll change frequently over the following days in light of cuts, potential trades, restructures, extensions and free-agent pickups.

Of note, free agency doesn't technically stop at any particular point, as players who are no longer under contract can sign with any team extending an offer.
The first waves of free agency tend to be the most active, diminishing in the weeks leading up to the NFL Draft in late April and then picking up again once the draft is complete when teams look to address remaining needs.
