The 49ers have a large number of pending free agents heading into the offseason, including some notable names.
The San Francisco 49ers enter 2025 with plenty of uncertainty, and it's not just wondering about what kind of money quarterback Brock Purdy will command on a lucrative contract extension.
After failing to make the playoffs for the first time since 2020, the Niners will need to usher in a number of changes, which will include a good amount of roster overhaul.
Part of that process involves bidding farewell to free agents.
Granted, this is a yearly process for all 32 teams, and San Francisco is no exception. However, considering the lackluster results from 2024, saying farewell to a good chunk of the roster might be the instrument toward creating a better one for 2025.
The 49ers currently have 34 pending free agents, of which six are exclusive-rights free agents. ERFAs, as they're known, technically aren't free agents because they can only negotiate new contracts with teams holding their rights.

The six ERFAs in question are:
- TE Jake Tonges
- DE Sam Okuayinonu
- TE Brayden Willis
- LB Jalen Graham
- DT Evan Anderson
- OT Austen Pleasants
Considering the minimal cost associated with retaining ERFA players, the Niners likely re-sign all six names this offseason.
The other 28 pending free agents, however, are less likely to return.

There are a number of starters from San Francisco's 2025 roster who'll be hitting the market, including Hargrave, Hufanga, Ward, Banks and Mason.
Hargrave, whose contract was restructured this season, isn't likely to return. But the 49ers have tougher decisions regarding others like Ward and Hufanga.
Likewise, Mason's own RFA status could potentially create complications. Should the Niners offer a second-round tender, it'd cost them an estimated $5.217 million for a capable backup to All-Pro runner Christian McCaffrey. But, the emergence of rookie tailback Isaac Guerendo possibly negates the need.
For the UFAs, their existing contracts expire at the start of the league new year in March, even if San Francisco still owes them money in added void years.
