The 49ers' first free-agent signing of 2025 is for a seldom-discussed tight end whom most fans probably haven't heard of.

The San Francisco 49ers spent the opening hours of the NFL free agency negotiating window watching a number of their key players sign deals elsewhere.

Offensive lineman Jaylon Moore signed a lucrative deal with the Kansas City Chiefs, while running back Elijah Mitchell joins him there on a one-year flier. Safety Talanoa Hufanga is off to the Denver Broncos, and there are likely going to be plenty more departures over the coming hours and days.

The Niners, at least so far, have been relatively quiet on the market, which isn't a surprise after reports broke that CEO Jed York was aiming to curtail spending in 2025.

So, not surprisingly, San Francisco's opening free-agent pickup prior to the league new year beginning on March 12 wasn't exactly a household name.

Luke Farrell is 49ers' 1st free-agent pickup of 2025

The 49ers engineered their first transaction of the free agency window by landing former Jacksonville Jaguars tight end Luke Farrell, a fifth-round selection by the Jags back in 2021 out of Ohio State.

According to NFL Network's Ian Rapoport, it's a three-year deal worth up to $20.25 million, $11 million of which is guaranteed.

Farrell hasn't exactly cemented himself as a major pass-catching option, although Jacksonville's recent turmoil and offensive ineptitude certainly played a role in his lack of production.

Over his career, the 27-year-old tight end has 36 receptions for 318 yards over 66 games played.

Why did the 49ers sign Luke Farrell?

For years, the Niners have aimed to get a quality No. 2 tight end behind their All-Pro, George Kittle, but those efforts have largely been unsuccessful.

It's possible they view Farrell as a quality blocker, which is a role that largely went unfilled last season after backup tight end Charlie Woerner departed via free agency to the Atlanta Falcons. That said, San Francisco could just as easily view the 6-foot-5 target as an unpolished pass-catching gem whose career never had the context it needed.

One might also be concerned if Farrell is a possible shoo-in replacement for fullback Kyle Juszczyk, whose own future in the Bay Area is in question.

Either way, the 49ers have made a signing.
