The 49ers are armed with 11 total picks in the 2023 NFL Draft, but only a handful of them fall on Day 2 of the draft, which encompasses Rounds 2 and 3.

If you’re a diehard San Francisco 49ers fan but don’t know too much about the annual NFL Draft, you might want to prepare yourself for some quiet times for the first couple of days.

The 2023 draft kicks off on Thursday, April 27 at 8 p.m. ET and features Round 1 only on that date.

However, general manager John Lynch and the Niners don’t have a first-round pick. Barring some lucrative trade involving San Francisco, you won’t be hearing the 49ers grab any player in Round 1, meaning your Thursday night will probably be pretty boring.

Day two of the NFL Draft is a bit different, though. On Friday, April 28, the draft will encompass both the second and third rounds of the draft, which happen to speed through picks a little faster than Round 1.

That said, you’ll still be pretty bored in Round 2, as the Niners don’t have a second-round pick either.

Why?

Well, back in the spring of 2021, San Francisco traded away multiple selections (including this year’s first-round pick) for the No. 3 overall selection in that year’s NFL Draft, which was subsequently used to take quarterback Trey Lance. Then, last October just prior to the NFL trade deadline, the 49ers acquired All-Pro running back Christian McCaffrey from the Carolina Panthers, and that transaction cost Lynch and Co. this year’s second-round pick and the Niners’ own third-round selection, too.

As such, at least this year, San Francisco’s number won’t be called until Round 3 of the draft.

So, what picks do the 49ers have on day two?

The Niners traded away their own selections for both Rounds 2 and 3 of the 2023 NFL Draft, both for McCaffrey.

That said, San Francisco stockpiled three compensatory picks toward the end of the third round, all due to the Rooney Rule that rewards teams for developing minority coaches and assistants who assume bigger roles with other teams.

Armed with three comp picks, all of which come toward the end of the third round, Lynch and the Niners will start getting active toward the end of day two.

San Francisco owns the following picks, all of which are to be announced on Friday:

  • Round 3, No. 99 overall (compensatory)
  • Round 3, No. 101 overall (compensatory)
  • Round 3, No. 102 overall (compensatory)

Those last two selections actually close out the third round, although it’s possible the 49ers trade all or some of those picks away between now and when they’re actually announced.

The 2023 NFL Draft is on Thursday, April 27, and day two of the draft will take place on Friday, April 28.
