The San Francisco 49ers brought in talent through the 2019 NFL Draft, meaning a number of veterans could lose their roster spots this season. Here are five newly placed on the roster bubble.

San Francisco 49ers head coach Kyle Shanahan stressed the desire to be forced into tough roster decisions when he addressed the media during the 2019 NFL Draft.

The Niners made eight total selections between Rounds 1 and 6 during the draft, adding a prolific pass-rusher in the first round, Ohio State’s Nick Bosa, while reinforcing the wide receiver corps in the second and third rounds, respectively, with South Carolina’s Deebo Samuel and Baylor’s Jalen Hurd.

Day-three picks, along with the crop of undrafted free agents, will only add fuel to the proverbial fire that could burn up veteran players’ holds on roster spots heading into 2019.

Samuel and Hurd’s additions, for example, create a lot of pressure on the 49ers’ wide receiver corps — a group which failed to produce a single 500-yard receiver in 2018. Shanahan will likely be put into a position where he is forced to let go of roughly half his wide receivers between now and Week 1 of the regular season.

But that’s the nature of roster improvement. With each addition, there’s another player who likely winds up losing a spot.

Sometimes those players can be good ones, too.

There tend to be some surprises when final roster cuts are announced after the preseason. Between now and then, these new additions to the Niners’ roster bubble will at least be presented a chance to prove themselves worthy during offseason activities, organized team activities, training camp and the preseason itself.

Still, these five players suddenly find themselves on the roster bubble following the 2019 NFL Draft.
