MORGANTOWN, WV – OCTOBER 25: Trevon Wesco #88 of the West Virginia Mountaineers runs after the catch against Terrel Bernard #26 and Clay Johnston #44 of the Baylor Bears at Mountaineer Field on October 25, 2018 in Morgantown, West Virginia. (Photo by Justin K. Aller/Getty Images) /

West Virginia tight end Trevon Wesco is never going to be a No. 1 tight end in an elite NFL passing offense, but he could be the perfect counterpart to 49ers tight end George Kittle. A ferocious blocker who also played fullback in college, Wesco topped all tight ends with 24 bench-press reps at the 2019 NFL Scouting Combine.

But along with his strength and blocking skills, Wesco showed that he was more than merely a high-end blocker, as he added 366 receiving yards to a West Virginia offense not known for its utilization of the tight end in the passing game.

Surprisingly, given his lack of speed, Wesco did much of the work on his own, which was well-summarized by John Ledyard of The Draft Network:

"I don’t know how a tight end this slow and incapable of elusiveness makes things happen after the catch, but here we are. Obviously not a make-you-miss type in space, nor is he a home run threat, but incredibly tough to bring down and has really good balance through contact. Withstands shots and carries defenders with him for extra yards. Carnage of missed/broken tackles left in his wake is eye-popping at times."

Wesco would provide Shanahan with a mauler in the running game, and a receiver who would aim to run over defenders in the passing game, at the fraction of the cost of tight end Garrett Celek‘s $2.7 million salary.
