If Notre Dame offensive lineman Alex Bars is available with the No. 212 overall pick in the 2019 NFL Draft, he makes too much sense for the 49ers to pass up. Bars would be in the early-round draft discussion if an unfortunate September knee injury hadn’t cut his final college season short.

A leader in the Notre Dame locker room, Bars replaced 49ers right tackle Mike McGlinchey as team captain for the Fighting Irish in 2018 prior to his injury. If Bars is fully recovered, he would be an immediate upgrade as a backup offensive lineman, given the team’s lack of depth at the position.

Although Bars wasn’t expected to be a first-round talent like his former teammate, the versatility of the 6-foot-6 lineman, who played both guard and tackle in college, provides enough value for a late-round flier for the San Francisco 49ers.
