Houston cornerback Isaiah Johnson is the definition of a developmental corner.

At 6-foot-2 and 208 pounds, Johnson looks like the prototypical Press Cover 3 cornerback who would thrive in 49ers defensive coordinator Robert Saleh’s defensive scheme. In addition to his size, Johnson also runs a 4.4 40-yard dash, and ranked in the top-5 among cornerbacks in the broad jump, 3-cone drill, and 20-yard shuttle at the 2019 NFL Scouting Combine.

Even with these impressive traits, all signs point to Johnson being available at pick No. 104, because the converted wide receiver is still learning how to play a new position on the defensive side of the ball.

With the addition of free-agent cornerback Jason Verrett, the 49ers hope to have three starting-caliber outside cornerbacks in 2019, in addition to second-year corner Tarvarius Moore. This would allow the team to draft a high-upside prospect like Johnson in the hope that he develops into a future star, as opposed to drafting a high-floor player who would potentially be forced into a starting role.

If given the appropriate time to develop his technique, Johnson could have a bright future in the league at the cornerback position, and his ability as a gunner would likely provide him with an immediate role on special teams.
