Special Teams/Coaching

Well, head coach Kyle Shanahan’s first fourth-down attempt didn’t go so well, but give him credit for going for it in an otherwise lost season between two scuffling franchises.

Even if the play call seemed about as obvious as it could get.

The good news, though, is this was about the only questionable call Shanahan made over the course of the contest.

Special Teams

Here’s another weird thing — 49ers punter Bradley Pinion had just one punt, and it occurred in the fourth quarter.

It’s been a while since we’ve been able to say anything quite like that.

Kicker Robbie Gould was perfect on one attempt, and the Niners’ dominant efforts against opponents’ punt returns continued in Week 10, allowing a net-zero yards on the lone return attempt.

Coverage on special teams is important, everyone.

Grade: A

Coaching

Shanahan’s fourth-down call was questionable, although that was about the only gaffe. It was good to see the offense put more faith in running back Carlos Hyde and the ground game, which worked to the tune of 186 yards on 33 carries — an average of 5.6 yards per carry.

More from Niner Noise

The Giants entered the contest ranked 28th against the run, so this was a pretty obvious approach. But kudos to Shanahan for not varying from it.

Now, penalties were still a bit of a problem. The Niners were flagged six times for a total of 44 yards. But unlike previous weeks, these flags didn’t have an overwhelming impact on San Francisco’s efforts.

At any rate, Shanahan and the 49ers have their first win of the season, and they won’t have to worry about the possibility of going 0-16.

Grade: B

Not bad, especially with a bye week now on the horizon.
