Quarterback Comparison

The 49ers recently made a move to land former New England Patriots quarterback Jimmy Garoppolo via a trade with the New England Patriots.

Garoppolo didn’t see the field his first game with the Niners — a 20-10 loss to the Arizona Cardinals in Week 9. And with San Francisco having its bye next week, there’s a good chance the new QB won’t until Week 12 at the earliest.

Head coach Kyle Shanahan said the start will go to the incumbent, C.J. Beathard, via NBC Sports Bay Area’s Matt Maiocco:

Based off this assessment, there’s a chance Garoppolo plays, but it probably remains slight.

C.J. Beathard

You’ve got to give it to Beathard. He’s tough, especially after taking five sacks and 16 quarterback hits last week versus the Cardinals.

Protecting Beathard has been a problem, but it isn’t as if he’s the best when it comes to pocket awareness. According to Pro Football Focus, Beathard’s overall grade was 46.7 when under pressure entering Week 8. The data hasn’t been made available since, but a likely guess would be it’s just as low, if not lower.

On the season, Beathard’s net passer rating is 62.7 — ahead of only the Cleveland Browns’ DeShone Kizer (51.1) among all qualifiers.

The good thing, though, is the Giants don’t have much of a pass rush. Their 13 sacks on the year ranks 28th.

Eli Manning

There’s some buzz the Giants may bench veteran quarterback Eli Manning at some point this season in favor of the rookie, Davis Webb. With New York going nowhere fast, it’s feasible.

But starting Manning surely gives head coach Ben McAdoo the best chance to win.

Still, Manning’s numbers have been pretty bad this season, as shown below:

His passer rating is the lowest it’s been since 2010, when he led the league in interceptions (25). And those 12 touchdown passes are the fewest since, well, his rookie season when he tossed six.

Granted, not having a healthy crop of receivers has hurt. But it’s becoming apparent the Giants need to start thinking about their future without the 36-year-old Manning under center.
