The San Francisco 49ers may be trying to save money this offseason, but there are still moves they can make to improve the team. If they make these three moves, they should be in good shape to bounce back in 2025.
The front office may not be going all out like they have in past offseasons to improve the team, but there are still prudent moves that would make the team stronger. Here are three no-brainer moves the Niners should make.
Sign Brock Purdy to a contract extension
There have been a troubling number of rumors regarding quarterback Brock Purdy and the 49ers as of late. If these rumors are to be believed, the Niners may be trying to play hardball with their young signal caller.
This may all just be posturing and a natural part of the negotiation process, but it still feels like the 49ers are playing a dangerous game of chicken here. They know what they have with Purdy and they should not get too cute with these negotiations.
If they give Purdy a fair offer and negotiate in good faith then things should get done fairly quickly. They need to get this done to avoid more drama and so they can focus on other areas to improve the team.
Reunite the Bosa brothers
Right when the Los Angeles Chargers released edge rusher Joey Bosa, Niners fans were instantly calling for San Francisco to sign him and reunite him with his brother, Nick Bosa. Given the former's injury history, signing him would not break the bank.
The Niners need to rebuild their defensive line after it struggled last season, and signing the older Bosa brother would go a long way towards giving San Francisco the strong front four it desperately needs.
Sign Amari Cooper to replace Deebo Samuel
After the 49ers traded Deebo Samuel to the Washington Commanders, they created the opportunity to add a wide receiver.
They should go after veteran wide receiver Amari Cooper.
The 30-year-old veteran is not the same player he once was, but he at least gives San Francisco another viable pass catcher. He is coming off a bit of a down season in 2024, so the Niners should be able to get him at something of a discount and could even sign him to a one year "prove it" deal.
If the 49ers can lock up Purdy and sign these two veterans to bolster them on each side of the ball while also drafting well and infusing their roster with some young talent, they should be in a prime position to rebound after a rough 2024 campaign.
