While getting an extension done with Brock Purdy is the 49ers' top priority this offseason, Adam Schefter doesn't feel as if it's a guarantee.

From the NFL Scouting Combine, San Francisco 49ers general manager John Lynch shared that negotiations were fully underway with quarterback Brock Purdy.

However, unlike many of his prior pressers that all but guaranteed extension completions, Lynch made a subtle remark about not wanting to get ahead of themselves by ensuring a new contract for the signal-caller was imminent.

Understandably, Lynch is going to be hesitant after the tense standoffs that existed with previous extensions, including wide receiver Brandon Aiyuk and defensive end Nick Bosa, whose holdouts nearly stretched into the regular season. Likewise, the Niners had contractual issues with left tackle Trent Williams and running back Christian McCaffrey last offseason, too.

All of those deals have certainly scarred San Francisco, especially from a financial perspective. And there have been reports on how the 49ers' top brass isn't too pleased with how those deals went down.

The hope was for Purdy's own extension talks to go smoothly and quietly. However, according to ESPN's Adam Schefter, this might not be the case.

Adam Schefter's update on Brock Purdy extension isn't what 49ers fans want to hear

Speaking on The Pat McAfee Show, Schefter shared some insight that'll cast plenty of doubt on whether or not the Niners can successfully manage a new extension with their quarterback.

"The Niners have a bit of a cap issue, a cash issue," Schefter shared. "They can't put Brock Purdy, necessarily, where he might be. They can go to a certain level they'd want to pay him. But it's not going to be, I would imagine, quite as high as most people think."

Compiling other evidence out there, it's possible Purdy resets the quarterback market this offseason on a deal worth $60-plus million per season, although ESPN's Dan Graziano predicted a four-year deal worth up to $196 million, a shade less than $50 million per.

Either way, that's a lot.

Plus, in terms of actual cash spend and in light of San Francisco's decision to trade away wide receiver Deebo Samuel, Lynch's additional comments about the 49ers' recent spending are concerning.

"[We] have some tighter constraints than we’ve had in the past,” Lynch said, via Eric Branch of the San Francisco Chronicle. "You have to be smart and you have to think about long-term health. So we always want to be competitive now and into the future. If you just keep going, going, going … I love doing that. But you also have to step back sometimes and recalibrate."

To date, no one has openly come out and reported Purdy and the Niners are way far apart on contractual figures going forward, and that's good.

However, judging by the latest conversations, it appears as if that's very likely going to be the case.
