Sometimes, the simplest things need to be said.

Speaking from the NFL Combine, John Lynch made it clear the 49ers want to retain Brock Purdy for a very long time.

The San Francisco 49ers face a crucial offseason heading into 2025, one that'll likely involve paying quarterback Brock Purdy and making him one of the most expensive players in the entire NFL.

Of course, there are detractors. Purdy's 2024 efforts suggested he might not wholly be worth north of $50 million per year, but the market could simply dictate that number.

In turn, the Niners' previous approach of stockpiling expensive talent elsewhere on the roster will have to be altered once the quarterback's looming contract extension becomes official.

The decision whether or not to pay Purdy has become divisive, leading some to believe San Francisco should merely let the final pick of the 2022 NFL Draft play out the last year of his current contract, and then the 49ers can search for a cheaper alternative.

However, general manager John Lynch isn't exactly entertaining that notion right now.

John Lynch says 49ers have already begun negotiations with Brock Purdy

Speaking from the NFL Scouting Combine in Indianapolis, Indiana, Lynch led off his presser by informing reporters that negotiations with Purdy's agent for an extension have already started.

While Lynch wouldn't go into the specifics, he did make it clear he wanted Purdy in the Bay Area for a very long time.

"We have started negotiations. We're talking," Lynch said when asked about Purdy's looming extension. "I won't go into negotiations, as is always our stance. We want Brock to be our quarterback as long as we're here and beyond. We'll leave it at that."

This pretty much jives with what Lynch has said earlier, including his end-of-year press conference and in light of Purdy's "down" 2024 campaign.

Of course, talks could break down. Paying a high-profile player isn't exactly an easy task to reach, and the Niners found this out the hard way an offseason ago when they endured a high-profile standoff with wide receiver Brandon Aiyuk amid his own negotiations.

Lynch and the rest of the front office certainly hope talks with Purdy go much easier.
