Don't be surprised if 49ers limit George Kittle and Nick Bosa vs. Rams

They're both just coming back from serious injuries.

Head coach Kyle Shanahan delivered some of the best-possible news ahead of the San Francisco 49ers' high-profile Week 1 showdown against the Los Angeles Rams: tight end George Kittle (Achilles) and defensive end Nick Bosa (knee) would both be active for the contest despite being on the original injury report.

Defensive tackle Alfred Collins (knee) was ruled out after suffering a season-ending injury in practice, while rookie defensive lineman James Thompson Jr. (hamstring) is questionable.

It appears as if both Kittle and Bosa are ready to go.

Yet that doesn't automatically mean both veteran standouts will see extensive field time during the game. If anything, the Niners may be wiser to limit both integral pieces after the two worked their way back from serious injuries suffered last season.

49ers may put George Kittle and Nick Bosa on a snap count

Kittle tore his Achilles in the Wild Card round last January; a serious injury that can frequently require 10 to 12 months for a full recovery. The fact the All-Pro is back so soon is a near miracle, but now well on the wrong side of 30 years old, both Kittle and the 49ers have to be wary of any potential setbacks.

Bosa, meanwhile, suffered his third torn ACL last season. During training camp, he frequently missed practice with soreness in the surgically repaired knee, and only recently has he returned to the field for practices.

The Athletic's Matt Barrows already predicted the Niners would put both players on a snap count, saying there's almost no way Kittle plays "his usual 95 percent of the offensive snaps," while Bosa figures to see about 55 percent, based on previous data Barrows accrued.

Either way, San Francisco working both players back slowly ultimately means it'll have to rely more on depth at both positions.

Depth behind George Kittle, Nick Bosa remains critical

In Kittle's case, the picture is clearer behind him on the depth chart—Jake Tonges filled in admirably during an extended absence a year ago, and that figures to be the case again in 2026, if needed.

But the pass-rushing depth behind Bosa is far more concerning.

The 49ers are already going to be without reserve defensive end Sam Okuayinonu (foot) for several weeks, while rookie Romello Height is still acclimating to life at the NFL level. 2025 first-round draftee Mykel Williams remains on the reserve-injury list after suffering his own torn ACL last season, effectively leaving Keion White as the only recognizable name behind Bosa on the depth chart.

A year removed from recording a league-low 20 sacks, the confidence in the Niners pass rush can't exactly be that high.

However, San Francisco might have to think about the long game with regard to Bosa. It's more important he stays healthy over the duration of the season, as opposed to being an ever-present force looking to make several plays against L.A.'s offense.

It's not ideal, of course. But the 49ers would likely rather be weaker on defense for one game rather than lose Bosa for the entire season.
