It goes without saying that the San Francisco 49ers are better when longtime franchise tight end George Kittle is on the field. He's currently recovering from a torn Achilles, however, which has opened a door—one that Jake Tonges seems to be kicking down.
Tonges proved capable of making an impact in 2025. His production was tied virtually exclusively to Kittle's hamstring strain and corresponding six-game absence, though. For better or worse, the two were unable to coexist.
Nevertheless, as previously mentioned, Kittle's uncertain status at the start of 2026 potentially creates a power vacuum. Per himself, the seven-time Pro Bowler has "a chance" to play when the Niners visit the Los Angeles Rams in Week 1. His possible inactive tag/early limitations are far from ideal, albeit an easier pill to swallow, knowing Tonges can step in as an adequate replacement.
Not only did Tonges put himself on the map, but he's also since carried the momentum into this offseason. He's becoming someone San Francisco and (more importantly) quarterback Brock Purdy can trust and is comfortable leaning on in times of need.
Jake Tonges gives 49ers much-needed George Kittle safety net
On a 49ers squad that quite literally has future Hall of Famers at every skill position, it's Tonges who has stood out at training camp. Yes, the trio of Kittle, do-it-all running back Christian McCaffrey and star wide receiver Mike Evans have all missed time due to injury this summer.
But that doesn't change the fact that the unheralded veteran has emerged as Purdy's "go-to guy right now," per Sports Illustrated's Grant Cohn.
"Tonges clearly isn't the most dangerous receiver on the team, but he might be the most reliable one on the field in camp this year," Cohn wrote. "Purdy clearly trusts him because Tonges usually finds a way to get open and come down with the ball when it's in his vicinity. Expect him to make a significant, consistent impact this season."
Last season, Tonges drew at least five targets in five contests. He recorded at least 40 yards and/or a touchdown in all but one of them. Good things happened when the ball wound up in his hands, so the Niners don't have to be overly aggressive to accelerate Kittle's timeline.
While Kittle is aiming to suit up against the Rams, that doesn't mean we'll see him be a dynamic game-changer right off the bat. There's a huge difference between returning to the lineup and getting back to being one of the NFL's most well-rounded contributors.
In the meantime, someone may have to compensate for his elite playmaking ability, and Tonges has the skills to help fill the void if necessary.
Jake Tonges helps, but doesn't completely solve 49ers' George Kittle potential problem
Even with Tonges, the Niners would love to have Kittle at their disposal sooner rather than later, of course. The latter isn't just one of the best pass-catching weapons in the league; he's considered one of the premier blockers, especially at their position.
Kittle opens up San Francisco's run game as much as he does the aerial attack. He's also a vital leader, as evidenced by his eight-time team captaincy across nine pro campaigns, which will likely improve to nine-for-10in due course.
The fact of the matter is that there's no one-for-one alternative to him, regardless of Tonges' presence.
