Trent Williams drops major hint about future with 49ers on Instagram
By Ryan Heckman
This offseason has been marked by a pair of notable contract situations for the San Francisco 49ers. While fans have wanted to focus on the excitement and anticipation of another Super Bowl run this coming season, there's been somewhat of a small, dark cloud hanging over those hopes.
For quite some time, the Brandon Aiyuk contract saga was one of the biggest and most puzzling storylines around the league. Finally, a few days ago, it came to an end with the 49ers and Aiyuk agreeing on a new 4-year deal worth $120 million.
Following the Aiyuk deal, San Francisco's next move was almost too obvious.
The other contract situation, of course, had been that of All Pro left tackle Trent Williams. The veteran offensive lineman had been holding out for a new deal, and as Week 1 drew nearer, fans started to get a little uncomfortable -- and justifiably so. Williams is the best tackle in the league and has been for a long time now.
Finally, though, it appears as though there is a light at the end of the tunnel and that light is peeking through as we speak. Williams' brother recently posted to his Instagram, showing video of the man, himself, walking off a plane as he arrived in San Francisco.
Does this mean a new contract is on the way? It sure does.
All signs point toward a massive Trent Williams contract getting done
First of all, the easy angle here is understood by another NFL insider, Dianna Russini, who pointed out that it's a great sign when family shares something like this.
Obviously, Williams' brother wouldn't have posted something like this without Trent's blessing -- at least, one would hope that's the case. With how sensitive a situation this has been, there is no way Williams would allow a family member to post a hint like this without permission.
As if his brother's Instagram post wasn't enough proof, Williams' agency posted to social media and confirmed all of our suspicions.
Well, the drama appears to be over. Not only did Aiyuk get his contract, but Williams is headed to finalize his new deal as well.
There was no Aiyuk trade and there will be no more Williams holdout. Both players will wind up playing in Week 1 against the New York Jets, and in prime time on Monday Night Football.
Fans of every other NFC hopeful just let out a collective sigh of despair. The 49ers are keeping the band together, and San Francisco will once again be the creme of the crop within the conference if all goes according to plan.
