Perhaps the biggest loose end of the San Francisco 49ers offseason has finally been tied off, and it's a hefty band that did the job.

Brandon Aiyuk has needed a new contract since the end of last season, and it got to the point where we weren't sure if he'd be on the team when Week 1 arrived. There were rumors that the Patriots, Browns, and Steelers were all offering trades for Aiyuk, but in the end he'll stay right where he is now.

The Niners and Aiyuk agreed to a massive $120 million extension on Thursday, ending the hold-in and putting away the drama that came with it. The goal shifts back to winning a Super Bowl, and if that happens, Aiyuk will be hoisting the Lombardi Trophy alongside everyone else in San Francisco.

Full details of Brandon Aiyuk contract extension with 49ers

Niners fans have been in a holding pattern for most of the offseason and the entirety of the preseason. Both sides had been in a strange will-they-won't-they situation where it seemed like the 49ers and Aiyuk both wanted to get something done but couldn't find a middle ground.

Even as recently as Thursday morning it seemed the two sides might still be far apart, but that all changed quickly. Aiyuk and the Niners agreed to a four-year, $120 million contract that includes $76 million guaranteed.

It doesn't make him the highest-paid wide receiver in the league, but it certainly makes him one of the richest.

There are a few things to note about the deal, not the least of which is that it's a front-loaded contract. Aiyuk will be due most of his $120 million over the first two seasons, which is helpful for the 49ers since it allows the team some cap flexibility on the backend of his contract when there might need to be some other moves made.

Aiyuk's new deal is actually an old deal, in that it's the one that has been on the table since August 12th. The last few weeks of trying to finagle more money out of the front office didn't amount to anything, but it didn't hurt any feelings on either side -- so it would seem with the deal being agreed to.

It also means the Niners can now turn their attention to getting a deal done with Trent Williams, which is the next order of business. Structuring Aiyuk's deal the way John Lynch did might help San Francisco be able to inverse a deal for Williams, back-loading his deal while taking a lighter hit upfront.

Only time will tell, but if there's one takeaway from the Aiyuk deal it's that the 49ers are going to find a way to get something done with Williams.

It might have taken longer than fans would have liked, but Kyle Shanahan's offensive weapons are now set for Week 1, and Aiyuk can finally start getting back to business.
