The 49ers only sent one third-round pick off to the Commanders for Chase Young, meaning they'll still have a projected 11 selections in the 2024 NFL Draft.

The San Francisco 49ers made two notable trades prior to the 2023 NFL trade deadline, and one of them can be classified as a blockbuster.

General manager John Lynch's move with the Denver Broncos for defensive end Randy Gregory involved a mere day-three pick swap in the 2024 NFL Draft, which saw the Niners sending a sixth-rounder to Denver for Gregory and the Broncos' seventh-round pick.

That wasn't the blockbuster, though.

San Francisco pulled off quite the steal by acquiring another elite pass-rusher in Chase Young, grabbing him from the Washington Commanders for a compensatory third-round pick in next year's draft.

Should Young depart via free agency in 2024, the 49ers are almost guaranteed to get a Round 3 comp pick back in return.

A steal.

Gregory will provide depth support, and Young will form a legitimately potent duo with the reigning Defensive Player of the Year and former Ohio State teammate, Nick Bosa.

And it effectively cost Lynch and Co. just one draft pick, and they'll get that back a year later (most likely).

49ers picks in 2024 NFL Draft after Chase Young trade

The Niners are now projected to have 11 picks in the 2024 NFL Draft in the wake of the trade for Young, which sent off one of what'll be two compensatory third-round selections.

San Francisco will get one from the offseason hiring of minority assistants, Ran Carthon to become the Tennessee Titans' general manager and DeMeco Ryans to become the Houston Texans' head coach. And the 49ers get another from last offseason's free-agent departure of right tackle Mike McGlinchey to the Broncos.

Here's the projected list of picks:

  1. Round 1 (own)
  2. Round 2 (own)
  3. Round 3 (own)
  4. Round 3 (Compensatory)
  5. Round 4 (own)
  6. Round 4 (from Cowboys)
  7. Round 5 (Compensatory)
  8. Round 5 (Compensatory)
  9. Round 6 (Compensatory)
  10. Round 7
  11. Round 7 (from Broncos)

It's not yet known which comp pick in Round 3 will be sent off to Washington, and the comp picks for a net loss of qualifying free agents won't be made official until spring of next year.

The Round 4 selection from the Dallas Cowboys was the compensation for the pre-Week 1 trade of quarterback Trey Lance, and the Round 7 pick is from Denver in the wake of the Gregory deal.

With the 2023 trade deadline complete, Lynch and the 49ers won't be able to move picks until the start of the 2024 league new year in March.
