Laughable rumor links 49ers to underwhelming former Seahawks safety

The 49ers can't be interested in former Seahawks safety Jamal Adams, right?

Believe it or not, one rumor says the 49ers have potential interest in former Seahawks safety Jamal Adams.

The San Francisco 49ers currently have 90 players on their offseason roster after making eight selections in the 2024 NFL Draft and by adding a slew of other undrafted free agents immediately thereafter.

However, that doesn't prevent general manager John Lynch and head coach Kyle Shanahan from making additional roster tweaks and changes in upcoming weeks and months before training camp kicks off later this summer.

There are still plenty of free agents out there, including plenty of veterans who slipped through the first waves of the new NFL offseason and remain unsigned. With the draft now complete, teams often scour the list of available players to see if there are any upgrades available.

That said, a recent rumor linking a former rival player to the Niners surely can't seem like an actual upgrade.

49ers rumored to be in contact with former Seahawks safety Jamal Adams

In recent years, former Seattle Seahawks safety Jamal Adams was frequently the butt of many San Francisco jokes regarding this NFC West rivalry.

This video here only highlights (or lowlights) Adams' many underwhelming efforts against the 49ers when the two teams would play each other.

The 28-year-old former No. 6 overall pick of the New York Jets, who found himself traded to Seattle in 2020, experienced a major career regression after the move, marred both by poor play and extensive injuries, both of which prompted the Seahawks not to re-sign him.

He remains a free agent.

However, according to the Seattle Times' Bob Condotta, Adams is generating interest on the free-agent market.

Including teams like the Niners.

Condotta wrote:

"Sources said the San Francisco 49ers are one of a handful of teams who have kept in touch with Adams, so the Seahawks could have some competition for the former All-Pro safety, who is still just 28 years old.

Any contract for Adams would obviously be nowhere near as costly as his previous deal, a four-year pact signed in August 2021 that was due to pay him up to $72 million. "

San Francisco drafted defensive back Malik Mustapha in Round 4, adding him to a returning crop of safeties that include Talanoa Hufanga, George Odum and Ji'Ayir Brown.

That said, Condotta also suggests Adams could return as a linebacker instead of a safety, but the 49ers inked former Green Bay Packers All-Pro backer De'Vondre Campbell earlier this offseason while also adding Tatum Bethune in Round 7 of the draft to compete behind Dre Greenlaw and Fred Warner alongside returnees, Dee Winters and Jalen Graham.

So, is it a genuine interest on the part of the Niners?

The need isn't necessarily there, per se, but there's always a chance San Francisco is looking to drive up Adams' asking price, potentially forcing the Seahawks to spend more.

Either way, it'd be hard to envision Adams actually suiting up in the red and gold.
