You should have just kept the mustache, coach.

Kyle Shanahan explained his decision to shave off his offseason mustache, which probably won't go over well with the 49ers fanbase.

San Francisco 49ers head coach Kyle Shanahan might not be a trend-setter, although he's been known to popularize a number of different things during his reign atop the franchise.

Including the notable "Shanahat," a simple red cap he popularized during the 2019 season that became something of a fan-favorite.

Earlier this offseason, the Niners coach attended All-Pro running back Christian McCaffrey's wedding, and a photo went viral that showcased Shanahan's personal grooming style:

The "Shanastache," as it became known, probably could have had its own social media accounts, and fans quickly wondered whether or not the head coach would continue to sport it once the regular season rolled around.

Unfortunately, those fans will be disappointed.

Kyle Shanahan shaved off his "Shanastache'

Speaking to the media on the first day of San Francisco's training camp, a clean-shaven Shanahan told reporters why he opted to ditch the recognizable facial hair.

"I got very used to it, and I liked it because my wife did," Shanahan said of his mustache. "But I knew you guys would talk about it too much, so I had to shave it yesterday."

Boo.

"I've never worn a mustache before," Shanahan continued. "But once you've worn it for a week, you get used to it, and it's not a big deal until you see someone who hasn't seen you yet. And they look at you very weirdly."

Judging by fans' reactions on social media, the Shanastache wasn't perceived as weird, per se. If anything, most fans probably want it back.

Perhaps the coach opts to make it a form of good luck at some point this season, opting not to shave as long as the 49ers engineer a winning streak.
