49ers' latest loss suggests offensive line might not be as good as we thought

Was Week 1 an anomaly for the Niners' offensive line?

49ers-Vikings final. 17. 42. Final. 23. 60

The 49ers offensive line was nowhere near as impactful in Week 2 against the Vikings as it was the previous week against the Jets.

One of the many themes from the San Francisco 49ers' 2024 regular-season opening win over the New York Jets was how much the offensive line pushed around a vaunted Gang Green defensive line.

Not only did the O-line do a good job protecting quarterback Brock Purdy, but it also ensured third-year running back Jordan Mason rumbled to the tune of 147 yards and a touchdown.

However, Week 2's road contest against the Minnesota Vikings was another story.

Granted, Mason managed to net his second consecutive 100-yard game on the ground in the Niners' 23-17 loss at US Bank Stadium. But the Norsemen managed to largely contain him in the second half after Mason got off to a hot start.

With that only being a part of the equation, San Francisco's O-line mostly struggled in Week 2, especially when it came to keeping Purdy upright.

Here's a concerning stat from Sunday's loss: Purdy took six sacks.

Granted, at least two of those were on Purdy, including a scramble where he didn't quite get back to the line of scrimmage. That said, Purdy was regularly under pressure from a frequent five-man blitz from the Vikings' front seven.

Right tackle Colton McKivitz, widely viewed to be the 49ers' weakest link up front, was under duress and struggled in pass protection, while the Vikings also had success beating the interior of the Niners O-line.

Even All-Pro left tackle Trent Williams surrendered a sack in the contest.

To be fair, San Francisco was coming off a short week and had to travel two time zones east for an early kickoff.

Still, the end result from the 49ers' upfront blockers was less than impressive.
