49ers failure to capitalize on opportunities could mean trouble in 2024

Hopefully, Week 2 isn't a sign of things to come.

The 49ers should be handling the Vikings in Week 2 but found themselves trailing. And there are notable stats that reveal the issues.

The San Francisco 49ers found themselves trailing 13-7 at halftime against the Minnesota Vikings, a first half chock full of gaffes and mistakes.

Arguably the biggest one was giving up a 97-yard touchdown grab to All-Pro wide receiver Justin Jefferson, which saw mistakes in coverage by safeties Ji'Ayir Brown and George Odum.

But that wasn't the only error.

Earlier in the game, punter Mitch Wishnowsky had a punt blocked. However, immediately after the recovery by Minnesota, Wishnowsky failed to touch the Vikings player, which led to a hefty return that eventually set up three more points by the Norsemen.

Ironically enough, and in light of their 13-7 halftime deficit, the Niners nearly doubled Minnesota in time of possession, leading 19:13 to 10:47.

Granted, that score by Jefferson capped a Vikings drive that lasted a mere 52 seconds. And none of Minnesota's other scores, including the one before halftime, lasted longer than two minutes and 10 seconds.

49ers have an execution problem that can't grow larger

This points to an execution problem, both for San Francisco's offense and defense. While the 49ers' lone score capped off a 2:45-minute drive, the Niners have failed to extend drives, going 1-of-6 on third downs and 1-of-3 on fourth-down conversion attempts.

Likewise, problems on defense have directly led to two of the three Vikings scores.

Perhaps San Francisco is feeling the strain of coming off a short week, having played Monday Night Football in Week 1, while also having to deal with eastern travel and an early kickoff.

Or, the lack of execution on both sides is potentially a lingering concern.
