NFL expert gave 49ers lowest grade out of all 32 teams for their draft reaches

At least the Niners' draft efforts got people talking.

By this point, you're probably getting tired of hearing just how often the San Francisco 49ers reached throughout the 2026 NFL Draft, starting off with selecting Ole Miss wide receiver De'Zhaun Stribling at No. 33 overall when he likely could've been had in Round 3.

Grabbing Indiana running back Kaelon Black in the third round, too, was also a massive overreach.

The Niners certainly got people talking, and the reactions have put both general manager John Lynch and head coach Kyle Shanahan on the defensive.

But, regarding just how badly San Francisco's reaches are being perceived, the conversation keeps on going.

FanSided NFL Draft expert Mike Luciano recently took a look at the 49ers' draft class, and he didn't hesitate to assign it a D-minus grade, the lowest out of all 32 teams over the course of the three-day event.

"Those first three picks, Romello Height, a round too early and can't play the run despite his pass-rush gifts," Luciano added when explaining his grade for San Francisco. "Kaelon Black wasn't even the best running back on his own team in college ... didn't even get a combine invite, and he went No. 90 overall.

"But De'Zhaun Stribling going one pick after the end of the first round, the first pick of the second round, No. 33 overall. This guy might've been there at the end of the third [round] or the beginning of the fourth.

Ouch.

Granted, Luciano's favorite picks generally line up with the consensus favorites: defensive tackle Gracen Halton and cornerback Ephesians Prysock, who may need to salvage the class if the earlier picks end up flopping.

Either way, and especially now in light of so many critics, it's important to acknowledge just how frequently Lynch and Shanahan have reached in the NFL Draft, not just this year but also in drafts prior.

Perhaps the reaction, and ultimately the result of this draft class, may ultimately force the 49ers to rethink how they go about selecting players in the future.
