New 49ers cornerback has worst introduction possible as he shades Brock Purdy

He's started off on the wrong foot.

The San Francisco 49ers recently picked up cornerback Jack Jones and he is already in hot water with fans after some comments he made about Brock Purdy have resurfaced and gained some traction on social media.

Jones said the following on a recent podcast: “You can make quarterback easy to play and I think that was Cam Newton’s argument about Brock Purdy. They were making quarterback easy for him to play. You can hand the ball off 20 times to Christian McCaffrey and then dump it off 10 times to Christian McCaffrey and then dump it off 10 more times to George Kittle.”

To be fair, he did go on to say, “This is no knock on Brock Purdy, I just used him as an example because Cam Newton brought that up.”

That explanation is not exactly going to save him with 49ers fans. Many were ticked off that Cam Newton was talking trash about Purdy a few years ago when Purdy’s play got him inserted into the MVP conversation.

Jack Jones' anti-Brock Purdy comments have him in hot water with 49ers fans

Jones was trying to argue that playing cornerback is much harder than being a quarterback. Surely it is in some respects, but he could have made his point without subtly disparaging Purdy in the process.

It seems like the narratives surrounding Purdy are never going to fully go away. There are always going to be those who claim that he is nothing more than a system quarterback and any success he has is a product of who is around him on the field.

Never mind the fact that he’s had success both with and without his stars on the field. Never mind the fact that other quarterbacks also have star players to throw and hand the ball off too but they are not penalized in the eyes of prognosticators for it.

The nice thing is that Purdy is so humble and is seemingly such a nice guy that Jones’ comments will not become a locker room issue or anything he needs to address if he even hears about them at all.

Jones may have to clean up his comments though. It’s not the best way to ingratiate yourself with your new fanbase when the first thing that comes out is a clip of you criticizing that team’s quarterback.

Maybe he can make up for it by playing well next season, but he certainly has gotten off on the wrong foot with 49ers fans.
