No such thing as too much depth.

With the NFL Draft fast approaching, cornerback is one need that's starting to fall down the list for the San Francisco 49ers. Raheem Morris has made the position a priority in his first offseason in San Francisco, starting with Nate Hobbs, but the Niners have no intention of stopping their DB overhaul.

According to Ian Rapoport, the 49ers agreed to terms on a one-year deal with former Miami Dolphins cornerback Jack Jones. Jones appeared in all 17 games in 2025 with Miami, making 17 starts, and started in 16 of 17 games he appeared in with the Las Vegas Raiders in 2024, so he's plenty reliable.

The 28-year-old isn't exactly the flashiest player the Niners could have signed, but he fits in perfectly with what Morris looks for in a DB. Jones is a ball hawk who can make make big plays and is a pretty solid run defender, but his volatility in coverage is the main reason he went unsigned for so long. But against that Seattle rushing attack, additions like Jones still help, even in a small role.

Raheem Morris and the 49ers just signed another cornerback in Jack Jones

We know the Niners' starting cornerbacks on the boundary will likely be Deommodre Lenoir and Renardo Green, with Upton Stout or Nate Hobbs manning the nickel, so Jones isn't more than a depth move. But it isn't often you can sign a 17-game starter to be your CB5 in this league to begin with.

He was solid for Miami in 2025, but was bogged down by one of the least talented defenses (and secondaries) in the NFL. However, Jones logged a career-high 16 pass breakups with the Raiders in 2024, which tied for fifth in the league, so he's clearly proven that he can be a solid starter if needed.

The Niners were near the bottom of the NFL in takeaways last season, so at the very least, the former USC Trojan can help them in that area. Jones hails from California, so even though he grew up in the SoCal area, a return to his roots makes sense, especially with a semi-DB-needy team like the 49ers.

Hobbs is likely to play the Dee Alford role for Morris' defense because of his inside-out versatility and Stout's lack of size makes him the perfect nickel corner, so he enjoyed a promising rookie year. But Jones is probably the best full-time boundary corner the 49ers have outside of Green and Lenoir

He's not someone who will deter them from drafting a corner, but Jones is a solid player. With the 49ers' poor injury luck, John Lynch needs to bring in all the depth he can find. so on a prove-it deal, Jones could easily prove his worth, especially if he competes with Green for the CB2 job as expected.
