The San Francisco 49ers' efforts in the opening wave of free agency were defined largely by picking up wide receiver Mike Evans, trading for defensive tackle Osa Osa Odighizuwa and reuniting with linebacker Dre Greenlaw.
So, it's easy to understand why signing former Green Bay Packers cornerback Nate Hobbs largely went unnoticed by the fanbase.
Perhaps it shouldn't, though.
Fox Sports' Jordan Schultz reported the one-year deal, worth up to $4.5 million, late Thursday. And Pro Football Focus was quick to point out how effective the 26 year old was at defending against the run:
The 49ers are signing CB Nate Hobbs to a 1-year contract, per @Schultz_Report

The Niners struggled against the run last season, and getting such a defender on the perimeter can help.
But, there's a chance Hobbs might occupy a significantly bigger role than just that.
Don't sleep on Nate Hobbs playing vital role in 49ers defense
Hobbs, who spent his first four years in the NFL with the Las Vegas Raiders, was limited to just 11 games with Green Bay a season ago, and it was pretty clear he didn't quite jive with the defensive system there, allowing a 111.1 passer rating when targeted.
So, when the Packers released him earlier this offseason, it made sense San Francisco would target him and add a vital piece to coordinator Raheem Morris' secondary.
The 49ers have question marks at corner, too. While Deommodore Lenoir is cemented in as the roster's top cornerback, two-year pro Renardo Green fell out of favor with head coach Kyle Shanahan in the playoffs last January, suggesting there could be an opportunity for Hobbs to take over a full-time role.
At worst, the thought of pushing Green with Hobbs' presence might be enticing enough, especially at that modestly affordable price tag.
Over his five-year career, Hobbs appeared in 62 games, starting 43 of them while logging 308 tackles, 21 passes broken up and three interceptions.
Regardless, the Niners needed depth in their secondary, and Hobbs will provide that on the perimeter.
And don't rule out him being a starter right away in Morris' defense either.
