After months of waiting, it finally seems imminent there'll be some resolution between the San Francisco 49ers and disgruntled and (soon-to-be formally) AWOL wide receiver Brandon Aiyuk.
Aiyuk, who recently hired Drew Rosenhaus as his agent and filed the paperwork for reinstatement after being placed on the reserve/left squad list last season, is reportedly heading to the Niners facility on Friday to meet with team representatives about what's next.
For those thinking San Francisco will simply release him outright upon his arrival, it might not be so siimple and immediate.
NFL insider Tom Pelissero pointed out a looming hangup that could ultimately delay a quick transaction, citing how Aiyuk owes the 49ers $13 million in forfeiture from his guaranteed money after failing to meet specific terms of his contract extension signed back in 2024.
Veteran WR Brandon Aiyuk owes the 49ers roughly $13 million in bonus forfeiture — a potential complication in his efforts to secure his release by reporting to the facility Friday.

Pelissero added:
The NFL Management Council and the NFL Players Association are both involved in attempting to resolve the situation. The sides could reach an agreement to pay back the money, or it could go to arbitration. But it’s complicated and may take time to resolve.
In short, don't expect a quick resolution on the Aiyuk front.
Brandon Aiyuk's situation with 49ers may take more time to resolve
There seems to be an outside chance the Niners welcome Aiyuk back to their roster, particularly if it makes more financial sense to do so, and head coach Kyle Shanahan's latest comments on the matter didn't wholly rule that out.
However, several players didn't exactly come across as enthusiastic about Aiyuk's pending return, so that suggests an impasse and potential distraction for a San Francisco squad eyeing nothing short of a Super Bowl crown.
Needless to say, there's no clear resolution on the matter.
For starters, the NFL hasn't yet reinstated Aiyuk despite the paperwork being finalized, according to Pro Football Talk's Mike Florio. That's one delay, likely related to the $13 million apparently owed back.
Of course, Aiyuk might simply choose to hand over the $13 million right then and there, thereby clearing the 49ers from additional restitution and giving them an incentive to release him outright. And that'd be the ticket needed for Rosenhaus to convince another team to sign the receiver who hasn't stepped foot on a field since his ACL/MCL injury suffered back in October of 2024.
Yet Aiyuk and Rosenhaus may opt to fight that forfeiture, too, meaning there'd be delays in the process even though the wideout is technically back in the building.
Either way, it doesn't seem as if the story will come to a conclusive end anytime soon and just because Aiyuk finally reported back to the facility.
